Fern, Cane, Jean Toomer
For my Senior Independent Study through the Black Studies department at UCSB, I created a film adaptation to Fern, a short story in the novel Cane by Jean Toomer. Fern in the novel is an objectified woman, (or Toomer is pointing attention to her objectified state in the novel) but once on film, she holds so much power. She controls the gaze.
In this adaptation, I focus on the male narrator as a man who has no truths (is he driving the car, is he talking to himself? is his ego going to control him?) I play with the ideas of fantasy & reality, how the constructions of masculinity create an unattainable dominance (as in male lead dominating Fern as his ultimate conquest).
Fern indulges, but never lets him in. She knows people and she is tired of them.
Part of the narrative was staged. When the “taxi driver” or male’s inner consciousness is asking him what he can do for her, Fern walks on stage becoming alive in the fantasy of the male lead.
